This is a the Text Only Site, which is for people who have disabilities, or people who own an older computer and/or have very slow Internet access.

When on a page of this text site, you can return to the text home page by just clicking on the heading i.e. "Sutherlands in the 1920's".

On a Text Only Site you can use text in different colors, gifs, plain or color backgrounds, horizontal lines, tables, bullets, links to other pages on the site, e-mail links and links to other sites.

It is easier to start off with a Text Only Site and then make an Graphic Enhanced Site by adding pictures and frames.

The Software we used included: IXLA Photo Easy - we used this for scanning pictures and changing .bmp (bitmap) pictures to .jpg (jpeg), Microsoft Word 2000 and Macromedia Dreamweaver 3. We edited .jpg files by IXLA Photo Fix, then copied them to clipboard, and finally pasted them into Microsoft Paint. When finished we selected all (don't then quit Microsoft Paint all you lose image from clipboard) and then we pasted back into IXLA Photo Fix. We found using Help in Macromedia Dreamweaver 3 helped us to learn how to use Macromedia Dreamweaver 3.

You can use Microsoft Word 2000 for Grammer check, you ctrl+c (copy) your highlighted text from Macromedia Dreamweaver 3 and then ctrl+v (paste) your text into Microsoft Word 2000.

You should continually save the page you are were working on, because your computer could crash and you could lose the page you are on.

It is a very good idea to backup your site reguarly.

Something very important to do, is to work out what browsers you want your web page/site useable by, then check each page for compatibility with target Browsers you want. With Dreamweaver you use the 'Check Target Browsers' feature. This tests the HTML in your documents to see if any tags or attributes are unsupported by your target Browsers. In Dreamweaver you can check it two ways. One allows you to check the page you are currently working on, the other allows you to check the whole site. We modified our Text Only Site to be suitable for Netscape Navigator versions 2.0 and above and for Internet Explorer versions 2.0 and above. We want our enhanced site suitable for Netscape Navigator versions 4.0 and above and for Internet Explorer versions 4.0. and above.

Once your site is linked up and you have a Site Cache, it is best to Recreate Site Cache after you make changes, to ensure that everything is linked properly together.

If you are having problems with your web site/page you can check to see if your links are broken. In Dreamweaver you can check it two ways. One allows you to check the page you are currently working on, the other allows you to check the whole site.

If that does not work, you can go into the HTML Source then check if you can spot a problem. If you can't spot the problem you can compare the HTML Source from that page to another page that has no problems.

If things don't seem to be going right and you have tried everything you can do and can't work out how to do something, it is best to leave it alone and take a break and do something else. During the break your subconscious will keep working and maybe a solution can make itself known.
